Catherine Stukenborg, our
intern here at Town and Gown, went on a summerr trip to Key West. The
photographs she brought back are absolutely beautiful- you wouldn't
believe she actually stayed in the United States!
Here's what Catherine
wrote to us: "Are you looking for an island getaway without getting out of
the U.S? Here's your answer. Last week I discovered my paradise in the island
regions of southern Florida. Key West, Florida is quite possibly one of the
most quaint and somewhat historic towns of the United States. Yes, it is a
nice, long drive form anywhere in Mississippi, but the escape is well worth the
distance. If you're looking for a fun family vacation or a serene retreat, Key
West definitely fits the bill. While in Key West, my family and I stayed at the
Doubletree Resort enjoying it's tropical pool and nightly cookies. One main
attraction that isn't exactly ordinary, but a much more adventurous way was
taking a tour of the island by way of jet skis. By touring Key West this way,
my family and I were able to ride in both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of
Mexico. To make it around the entire island took about an hour and a half with
several stops to make sure we didn't lose anyone and to get some historic or
fun information. Another adventure my family took part in was parasailing. I
feel like this may be the most ideal place to parasail because once you're in
the sky you can see the entire island below you. That was a sight to see! Along
with these two activites, there were plenty more. The number one thing I
recommend is going to either Mallory Square, a plaza on the waterfront, or Fort
Zachary Taylor to view the breathtaking sunset. The sunset here is like no
other. One night after the sun had set so beautifully, the crowd watching began
clapping in response to its pure majesty. Now when you think of an island, I'm
sure you all think the way I do and believe there are beaches galore. Well, Key
West is a little different. There are two public beaches that are nice, but the
one you have to go to is the one at Fort Zachary Taylor. It is located in the
state park that is home to a historic fort. We discovered it a little too late,
or otherwise we would've been there everyday. Oh, and you can't forget the Key
Lime Pie! This place LOVES its key lime pie. Every store has something key lime
flavored, and I have to say they know what they're doing. One thing I didn't
try that I hear is a must is their "conch fritters." I won't tell you
what it is, but if you like your food fried I bet you'll enjoy a famous conch
fritter from Key West. That wraps up my memories from beautiful Key West. Hope
this motivates you to whisk you or your family to the island of
paradise!"
Now that we're all
jealous of Catherine's time in paradise, pack up and go somewhere beautiful.
Even if it's for the weekend, we all deserve a little getaway every now and
then!
